John Hallett

(1764 - 1828)

John Hallett was born to William and Joan Hallett (nee Batt) in Kingsbury Episcopi, in 1764.

John married Mary Shepherd on 28 October 1787 in Kingsbury Episcopi. Mary is believed to be the daughter or sister of John Shepherd who was a local land owner / renter and land tax assessor in Kingsbury.

Their first child Ann, was baptised in Kingsbury Episcopi on 9 March 1788. Ann died shortly after and was buried in Kingsbury on 16 March 1788.

Kingsbury Episcopi parish records show two significant events on 23 April 1789. The baptism of a child named Mary to parents John and Mary Hallett and also a burial of Mary Hallett. It would appear that Mary may have died during or shortly after childbirth. Baby Mary died shortly after and was buried on 30 August 1789.

At the age of 26, John married Mary Bradford on 18 March 1790 in Martock. One of the witnesses was John Shepherd, father or brother of his former wife.

John and Mary had the following children:

1791 Joseph
1782 Mary
1794 Elizabeth
1796 John
1798 Sarah
1800 William
1803 Isaac
1804 Unknown female

The 1795 land tax records identify John owning and occupying a house, adjacent in the record to that of John Shepherd on one side and Robert Pittard on the other.

John is believed to be the John Hallett who traded with William Pittard whose farm accounts from 1785 to 1813 are held at the Somerset Records Office. Transactions involving John are detailed below.

1802 - Samuel Cotterel, cordwainer, to Mary Sweeting

Johns father died in 1807, and left property to John and his brother in a will. The following is a transcript of the probate record:

John's wife Mary died and was buried in Kingsbury Episcopi on 27 July 1810.

John, worked as a cordwainer and appeared to be a respected member of the community as he signed and sealed that Land Tax collected was correct in 1810, 1811 and 1814. He also was a witness to several family weddings..

At the age of 53, John married Alice Pittard on 26 Jan 1818 in Kingsbury Episcopi. There are no family names as witnesses to the marriage but Land Tax records after 1818 show John's house going to his brother as Proprietor and changed names in the Pittards next door.

What became of John after this date is unknown. A John Hallett of Milton of about the right age was buried at Martock in 1828.

Much of the above information was provided by Geoff Hallett who lives in Canada and has researched the Hallett family in great detail. Significant contributions to Geoff's research on John Hallett's [ 1796 ] descendants have been made by Bob and Lynette Stunell of Adelaide, Australia and Bert Hallett of Kurri Kurri, NSW, Australia.
