John Gould was born in North Molton, Devon and baptised at All Saints parish church, North Molton on 17 March 1785. His baptism record indicates that his parents were George and Jane Gould.

Little is known of John until he reached the age of 37, when on 29 July 1822, he married Mary Fisher at All Saints parish church, North Molton.

The first child of the marriage, George, was baptised at All Saints church on 20 July 1823. The baptism record indicates that John was working as a husbandman.

Their second child Jane, was baptised at All Saints church on 02 April 1826; John would have been 41. The baptism record indicates that John had changed his job and was working as a labourer.

At the age of 44, John became a father again with the birth of his son, John. His namesake was baptised at All Saints church on 28 September 1829 where John's occupation is recorded as labourer.

A further child Susan, was baptised at All Saints church on 01 December 1834. John's occupation was recorded as labourer and he would have been 48 years old.

John died on 20 November 1843 at the age of 58. The death certificate identifies the cause of death as 'Dropsy', and an occupation of labourer. He was buried at All Saints parish church, North Molton on 26 November 1843.
